Rachel Klompmaker BNSc, MA, PHC-NP
Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner
Hi, my name is Rachel Klompmaker and I am a nurse practitioner with over 26 years of clinical experience. As a registered nurse for 16 years and the last 11 years working as a nurse practitioner, I have honed my clinical and assessment skills, in various sectors of health care; working primarily in emergency departments, general surgery, participating in medical evacuations and serving our geriatric population, I have learned the importance of empathy and compassion for the individuals I treat, as a whole person.
Following many years of nursing, I had a strong desire to learn and was eager to expand my nursing knowledge and understanding; an intellectual curiosity! Therefore, enrolling at Queen’s University and subsequently completing my Nurse Practitioner certificate, followed by completing my Masters of Nursing Science with Athabasca University. Although exhausting, and incredibly difficult juggling working full-time, maintaining a home, being a single mother of two and school, I finally felt complete. I was confident and ready to embrace all aspects of medicine.
As a nurse practitioner, I often work autonomously under pressure and make evidence-based decisions using critical thinking to guide my clinical decisions. A solid analytic skill-set allows me to collect information, evaluate my findings and develop a realistic plan of care to improve patient outcomes. I am committed to providing care that looks at the whole person, supporting their physical, emotional, social and spiritual well-being while considering what makes them well or unwell. My ultimate goal is to provide a patient and family-centred approach, empowering my patients and their families, with my support, to develop a unique plan of care that is achievable for their individual lifestyle.
Outside of work, I find emotional comfort, connection and a sense of security with my family and friends; home is where my heart is! I enjoy starting each day at the gym, reading a good book, whilst sipping my tea, or enjoying the outdoors with my partner and my grown-up daughters. We recently moved to a larger property, which I’m sure our dogs will absolutely love as well as our newest editions: chickens! During the very short Canadian summer months, we will be camping in our newly renovated Boler trailer, whilst enjoying a campfire under the stars. At some point during adulthood, I realized the world’s natural beauty was enough.
I am enthusiastic for the opportunity to learn from the distinguished professionals on this team, as well as making a sustainable, positive impact in the everyday lives of the people we treat!
